Unsung Hero Album Art project

small enough to save the world and the muskrat’s sacrifice

Full-length Gapless Animation

(Denver, CO) On Friday, August 14, Denver-based artist, songwriter, and producer Teresa Suydam released Unsung Hero, a conceptual EP paying homage to their Indigenous heritage. Over the course of the project’s five songs, Suydam tells an ancient Anishinaabe creation story, reinterpreting the oral tradition of their Ojibwe* ancestors through the medium of modern pop music. Unsung Hero recounts the legend of the humble muskrat, an unlikely hero who revived the Earth after a great flood. “I wanted to tell that story in my own way, and make it more contemporary so that it’s digestible for people now,” Suydam shares. They will celebrate the release with a community gathering on Thursday, September 24 at the Arvada Community Room, where they will also premiere an animated short film that accompanies the EP.

Diving deeper into Suydam’s Ojibwe identity, Unsung Hero continues a journey of self-discovery first introduced on Suydam’s 2024 debut album, Lost Bird. As an adoptee eager to reconnect with their biological family’s culture, Suydam began reading various works by Indigenous authors, including a kid’s book on the muskrat creation story. “When you’re young and learning about your culture, you learn through children’s stories and children’s music,” they explain. “So I wanted to keep that same rudimentary grounding, because it’s my way of learning it myself as well.” Each of the story’s characters is represented by a different instrument or tone that reflects their role, much like in Sergei Prokofiev’s beloved children’s symphony Peter and the Wolf. Providing additional context for those unfamiliar with the muskrat narrative, the Unsung Hero release celebration will feature stations elaborating on Anishinaabe lore, as well as the debut of a companion visual animated by Rnotte. “I’m going to debut the whole gapless animation, and it’ll be a community event with different tables associated with each song,” Suydam hints. “So as people go through they can read a little bit about each one before hearing the whole thing.”

Suydam’s latest EP challenges listeners to believe in the underdog, reminding us that even the smallest hands can shape the world. Unsung Hero is out now on all music platforms. The Unsung Hero release celebration will take place Thursday, September 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Arvada Community Room, 7601 Grandview Avenue, Arvada, Colorado.
